West Side
West Village
The West Village is primarily residential, with a multitude of small restaurants, shops, and services.
Starting Point: Washington Square Park
Washington Square Park is an almost 10-acre open space, dominated by the Washington Square Arch at the northern gateway to the park. Most of the buildings surrounding the park now belong to New York University, but many have at one time served as homes and studios for artists.
Directions: Take the 6 to Astor Place or the R or W to 8th Street. From each, walk west on 8th Street and turn left on University Place/Washington Square East.
Friends Building
Directions: From Washington Square Park, turn left on Washington Square West/Macdougal Street. Turn right on Minetta Lane. Turn right on Carmine Street and then right on Bleecker. Turn left on Grove Street. The Friends Building is at the corner of Grove and Bedford.
Hudson Street
Directions: Continue on Grove Street and turn right on Hudson Street.
Charles and Perry Streets
Directions: From Hudson Street, turn right on Charles Street. Turn left on 7th Avenue and left on Waverly Place. Turn left on Perry and continue to Bleecker, where you will take a right.
Chelsea Market
Chelsea Market is a food hall, shopping mall, office building and television production facility that fills an entire city block in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. It was built in the former National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) factory complex where the Oreo cookie was invented and produced.
Directions: Continue north on Bleecker. Continue north on Hudson, which becomes 9th Avenue. After 15th Street, you will arrive at Chelsea Market.
High Line
The High Line is a 1.45-mile-long linear park built on an elevated section of a disused New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line. Repurposing of the railway into an urban park began construction in 2006, with the first phase opening in 2009, and the second phase opening in 2011. The third and final phase officially opened to the public on September 21, 2014.
Directions: From the back entrance of Chelsea Market, take a left on 10th Avenue. Take another left on 14th Street. Turn right on Washington Street and continue to Gansevoort Street. You will see the stairs to the High Line here.
American Museum of Natural History
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the largest museums in the world. The museum complex comprises 28 interconnected buildings housing 45 permanent exhibition halls, in addition to a planetarium and a library. The museum collections contain over 33 million specimens of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites, human remains, and human cultural artifacts.
Directions: Exit the High Line at 23rd Street. Walk east on West 23rd Street. Enter the subway at 8th Avenue on the Uptown side. Take the C to 81st Street.
